Learning The Great Need Of Hard Hats Safety
It is not feasible to eradicate all risks within the work place. It is possible, however, to ensure that workers are provided with appropriate protective head wear. Accident figures suggest that a disturbing number of people sustain head injuries while at work. Many of these injuries are avoidable and could be prevented if hard hat safety was observed.
Safety Laws
Employers face legal obligations to ensure a satisfactory standard of safety in the work place. Failure to comply with these could entail hefty fines. In the event of serious injury or death, negligent employers could face criminal prosecution. Many people would agree that employers have a moral responsibility to ensure the well being of employees.
Protective Headgear
There are certain situations in which protective headgear should always be worn. Hats should be worn on sites where there is a risk of head injury from falling objects and debris. Accidental collisions with fixed objects, such as overhead beams, also pose a risk. On any site where there are electrical hazards,the appropriate hats must be worn. This applies to all people on the site including visitors.
Risk Assesment
The most appropriate head wear for any given situation will be determined by a work place risk assessment. There are basically two types. The first, Type I,is designed to protect heads from impacts from above. The second, Type II, provides additional protection from lateral impacts. Additional features such as earmuffs or face shields may also be appropriate.
Classes
Protective headwear is also categorized into different classes according to the level of protection they afford against electrical currents. Class G, or general class hats, will protect against shocks of up to 2 200 volts. Class E, or electrical class hats, are proof tested at 20 000 volts. Class C refers to conductive hats; these provide no significant protection against electrical currents.
Deterioration
All helmets are subject to eventual deterioration. It is advisable to replace helmets after five years. If there is any obvious sign of distress to the shell such as scratching, dullness or cracks, the helmet should be considered unsafe. If a helmet is struck by a hard object, it will have to be exchanged for a new one, even if no damage is apparent. If the helmet cannot be secured properly to the head because of damaged suspension, these parts should be replaced.
Care
Helmets should not be altered or modified in any way. This may compromise their protective capabilities. Paints, solvents and harsh chemicals can all cause damage and reduce effectiveness. Exposure to sunlight will increase wear and tear. It is inadvisable to stretch straps back over the helmet. Workers should always wear them with the peak to the front.
Everybody in the work place should have an adequate understanding of hard hat safety and be proficient in the use of these helmets. Implementing good safety clothing and equipment practices may prevent serious injuries from occurring and may possibly save lives. Safe working practices are in the interests of both employers and employees.
